How medical liens work in California
California recognizes hospital liens under Civil Code § 3045.1 et seq. and has one of the most developed lien-medicine markets in the country, with broad availability of doctors, surgery centers, and imaging providers willing to work on medical liens or letters of protection in personal injury cases. MICRA (Civ. Code § 3333.2) caps non-economic damages in medical malpractice but does not apply to third-party PI recoveries.

California has the deepest pool of doctors-on-lien and lien-friendly facilities in the country, concentrated in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, San Diego, and the Central Valley. LawyersTrend tracks providers across all major California metros, with filters for specialty, language, and lien-acceptance type (PI, WC, and letters of protection).
